Straight from the phone, this is a photo of a turbulent evening sky.
Using depth of field to foreshorten the image and flatten out the normal background / foreground interplay, I attempted to ‘paint’ these winterized tree trunks with evergreen colours from shrubs in the foreground. Even though at first glance this is a photo of greenery, the stars of the show are actually the dull trunks hiding way in the back! I lead the eye to them and hint at their importance through the branches from the bottom right flowing to the upper left. Try looking at this photo without ending up staring at these trunks! Leading the eyes in this way is helped by the bright white in left half of the picture which grabs your attention and gives it nowhere else to go.
You’ll see some more natural effects in future posts. It’s always been one of my favourite themes.
